Xbox Gamers Can Now Have Any Gamertag They Want
The Xbox console has long been a place where there can only be unique gamertags. That means that only one of each gamertag could exist. That is now changing, and gamers can pick any gamer tag they want.
The catch is that if you do choose a gamertag that is taken, you will be assigned a “#” at the end followed by a number. The person who originally had that gamertag is the only one who won’t have the “#” and numbers at the end.
Along with support for all gamertags also comes support for new character sets. The newly supported characters include:
- Basic Latin
- Latin-1 Supplement
- Hangul
- Katakana
- Hiragana
- CJK Symbols for languages in China, Japan, and Korea
- Bengali
- Devanagari
- Cyrillic
- Thai
Xbox Wire notes that the only way someone can take your original gamertag is if you decide to change it. Players should also know that changing their existing game tag to take advantage of the new naming rules could mean your old tag is lost forever.
