World’s Last Typewriter Factory Closes Its Doors

It will come as quite a surprise to most people that there is still a place in the world that you can buy brand new typewriters from. The typewriters day is well and truly over now though and even this oddity is coming to pass, as the last factory in the world to make them is closing its doors and selling off the remaining 500 units of stock it has left.

I doubt most people will be rushing to buy one before they’re all gone, but for many there will be a sense of nostalgia here from using one ‘back in the day’. The typewriters passing is definitely something to contemplate though, as the first typewriters were available all the way back in 1873!

When the company started making typewriters, the whole nation considered it the first step to an industrialised India. During its golden age in the 1990s, the company used to produce 50,000 machines every year, while the total output in India was about 150,000.

From the early 2000 onwards, computers started dominating. All the manufacturers of office typewriters stopped production, except us. Till 2009, we used to produce 10,000 to 12,000 machines a year, said Dukle.
