Windows Phone 8 Won’t Run On Any Current Smartphones

Those looking to buy a smartphone running Windows Phone, such as the Nokia Lumia 900 pictured below, would be wise to wait. Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Windows Phone 8 won’t run on any of the current generation of smartphones, which all run Windows Phone 7. This is because it relies on hardware features that will only be present on next generation smartphones, such as multi-core processors and higher resolutions. However, Microsoft are able to make three features of WP8 available to current smartphones in the form of WP7.8: Start screen will look like WP8; tile customization, supporting three sizes of tiles and it will be made available via Windows update and downloadable over Wi-Fi, rather than going via the carrier. All further updates to WP7.x will from now on be made via this method. Finally, one more piece of bad news is that WP8 apps won’t be backwardly compatible with WP7. Definitely hold off that purchase…
