Windows 8 to Usher Wave of Touch Laptop Sales, Yet Vendors Struggle to Make Money

By

Windows 8 is expected to usher in a new wave of touch-enabled laptop sales, yet it looks like the makers of these laptops are going have a hard time making money. This is because they will have trouble keeping their prices down, due to all the component makers not wanting to reduce their profit margins. This will in turn drive down demand for these products and hence profit for everyone.

It appears that the main factors pushing the price up are the price of Windows 8, Intel’s CPU prices and PC brand vendors not willing to sell at a loss (due you blame them?) As laptop ODMs already have very slim profits and this situation could slide them into unprofitability, it looks like they might delay manufacture of this new generation of laptops until the overall price can be brought down while still making a profit.

Since ultrabook prices are still unable to drop to a desirable level, while notebooks that feature Windows 8 are likely to increase in costs due to Microsoft greatly promoting the software’s touchscreen capabilities, while the software will continue to remain at a high price , PC vendors are currently facing great pressure as strong demand may not emerge as they originally expected.
