Setting up the WD My Net N900 Router

WD My Net N900 Setup
Western Digital allows you to configure the My Net N900 router in two
different ways. For those not really comfortable working with new
network hardware, there is a Setup & Resource CD that is provided
that has an EasySetup application which contains a wizard for you to set
everything up. We used the other method of setup and just typed in
wdrouter into our browser. (You can also type, 192.168.1.1 which will get to
the WD Setup Wizard also).

As you can see, the User Interface is very clear and simple. Not only does Western Digital choose the correct words to convey the process, the graphics and pictures that are used in the wizard work very well which I can imaging would help those who have never set up this kind of networking device.

The user interface that greeted us was easy to understand and intuitive. In fact, I don’t even remember wanting a manual for everything was right there and seemed to just work.

After a few more clicks, we were configured and
ready for basic internet browsing. Setup for the router was painless
and if you are on the upgrade path, moving to the WD My Net router will
be very simple. For those who might be setting up their first router,
Western Digital provides PC and Mac users a variety of ways to enter
setup mode.

As you can see from the below screen captures, the WD My Net N900 has a ton of customization and configuring sub-menus to get all that you can from this router.

There were many, many configuration options, but one thing that was missing was a sort of ‘Traffic Meter” where the user can tell what their network usage looks like throughout the month. With more and more ISPs ‘taxing’ or throttling heavy internet users, a sort of “Traffic Meter” to monitor monthly net usage can be worth its weight in gold!

Under “Advanced Settings”, a user could configure any one of a number of different features and options. From the network name to initializing a guest network on either the 2.4Mhz or 5.0Mhz bandwidth.

Another thing that I really liked about the My Net GUI was the ability to forward ports for things like FTP, BitTorrent, Remote Desktop, etc. The layout was simple enough for you to quickly add in port forwarding rules. Some other GUIs make it pretty painful, but not so for the Western Digital. Kudos to the designers for having a very solid firmware design.

Now that we are all connected, lets see how the router performs in the real world.
