VIA Labs, a subsidiary of VIA Technologies specializing in USB 3.0 integrated chip controllers, is sampling new USB 3.0 controllers for external hard drives with volume shipments slated for March 2011, according to the company. The new solution has been certified by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF).

Dubbed VL701, VIA’s new USB 3.0 HDD device controller is offered in either a 64-pin LQFP or 48-pin QFN package to satisfy various customer needs. Fellow IC design companies ASMedia Technology and JMicron Technology have started mass shipments of their USB 3.0 solutions for external hard drives. The transition to SuperSpeed USB 3.0 hard drives is expected to take place in 2011, industry sources believe.
