Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband Announced – Will Power Fourth Industrial Revolution
Verizon CTO Kyle Malady introduced the concept of 5G Ultra Wideband today in a blog post! We already know that there are differences in the capabilities of various deployments of 5G networks, but Verizon claims that they have the best around.
Verizon believed that to deliver the full potential of 5G, a company must possess three fundamental assets:
- Massive spectrum holdings, particularly in the millimeter wave bands. This is the only spectrum available today with the bandwidth available to realize the maximum potential for capacity, throughput and latency.
- End-to-end deep fiber resources.
- Ability to deploy large numbers of small cells.
Verizon says that they are the only company that brings all three pieces together for its customers through 5G Ultra Wideband. The millimeter wave spectrum is the cornerstone in enabling the Version 5G Ultra Wideband network. Verizon secured a large portfolio of millimeter wave spectrum that includes the large megahertz blocks needed to deliver the 5G promise. The purchase of Straight Path Communications, including their 28 and 39 GHz license portfolio and their dealings with XO Communications included acquiring millimeter wave spectrum licenses. We can’t wait to see some performance numbers on the latest mobile devices.
