US Border Patrol Allowed to Seize iPods & Laptops

It is now being reported by several outlets that the Department of Homeland Security has been granted the power to seize travelers “device(s) capable of storing information in digital or analog form,” including hard drives, flash drives, cell phones, iPods, pagers, beepers, and video and audio tapes” as well as “all papers and other written documentation.” If you are traveling in and out of the US, you might want to take a close look at the this new policy as it allows random warrantless search and seizures at the boarder.

Federal agents may take a traveler’s laptop computer or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed.
