SanDisk and M-Systems aim to increase the penetration rate of their co-developed U3 platform to 40% of the flash disk market in 2006, according to sources at downstream flash disk makers. U3 has gained support from other flash disk makers including Kingston, Memorex and Verbatim, among others, with the first drives set to begin shipping on October 15 in capacities ranging from 256MB to 2GB.

SanDisk and M-Systems established the joint venture U3 to push the flash disk based application platform late in 2004. With the embedded U3 platform, users are able to launch numerous personalized applications from the flash drive to any PC. The platform is targeted at mobile users that access more than one computer.
