TSMC May Expand 28nm Manufacturing Capacity

By

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) could be planning to expand it’s 28nm manufacturing capacity. According to TSMC, they are at full capacity on their 12-inch fabs due to increasing demand for 28nm products. This, on top of increased demand for 40nm and 65nm designs, may end up requiring the company to expand. It is not surprising then that more than a few Integrated Device Manufacturers (IDM) have started approaching the likes of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) and Samsung to manufacturer their designs as TSMC is currently unable to satisfy their demand do to extremely tight supply.

TSMC said during its most recent investor meeting that 28nm process technology would account for 5% of total wafer revenues in the first quarter of 2012, up from only 2% in fourth-quarter 2011. The proportion for all of 2012 is forecast to reach 10%.
