Thecus Unlocks CPU Core on N2200PLUS with Firmware Update

By

When Thecus began selling the N2200PLUS 2-bay NAS the company advertised it as having a single core Cavium ECONA processor. Well, it turns out that the processor inside was really a dual-core processor with one core being ‘locked’ by the firmware for unknown reasons.

Now the company has released a firmware that ‘unlocks’ the extra core and performance has improved significantly!

The Thecus N2200PLUS originally has read and write speeds at 41MB/s and 23MB/s. By keeping the drives the same and unlocked the extra processor core the performance jumps up to 67MB/s read and 43MB/s write! This is a ~90% improvement in write speeds and ~65% on the read speeds. Thecus says that opening up this additional CPU core uses absolutely no more energy than before as it was already being powered and just not used. If you own a Thecus N2200PLUS be sure to update your firmware to version v2.02.01 and get an amazing performance boost for free!

hecus has been working with Cavium to supply low-power processors with good performance to supply users with an option that is fast enough, but saves energy and doesnt bust your budget. When Cavium put out a new generation of their low-power ECONA processors with dual cores, Thecus was eager to get them to customers as soon as possible. Even with only one core operating, this processor was faster and more efficient than its predecessors and was part of what made the N2200PLUS a very attractive home NAS. With N2200PLUSs all over the market, it was just a matter of time before they could reach their full potential. These processors were just waiting for the right moment, and, as soon as Cavium was ready, Thecus did everything necessary to take advantage of the latent power in these high-efficiency processors. Thecus is now providing an upgrade from single- to dual-core for all Thecus N2200PLUS NAS in the form of a FREE firmware upgrade.
