TAG Heuer Connected Smartwatch Followup Tipped for Interchangeable Faces
The smartwatch market might not be exactly blowing up, but for a lot of people out there using a smartwatch is something you get used to having and don’t want to be without. The appeal of seeing who’s calling without having to dig your phone out of a purse or pocket is huge for many. One of the most expensive smartwatches out there is the TAG Heuer Connected, which is $1,500 for the most basic version.
You might not think a smartwatch that high-end would sell well, but it has sold well enough that TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver has said that the company plans to release a successor. That successor is rumored to have something that no other wearable offers- interchangeable faces. You might be thinking that all smartwatches have interchangeable faces, and they do to some extent.
What TAG is talking about isn’t just an LCD that lets you choose whatever watchface you want and display it on the screen, at least that’s not entirely what it is about. Sources who claim to be familiar with what Tag Heuer is cooking up claim that the watch will be called the TAG Connected Modular and it will have have a custom automatic watch head module that lets the user choose between a digital connected Android Wear 2.0 body and a traditional automatic movement.
That would seemingly mean that you can somehow change out the digital head unit to the traditional head unit with real moving hands. Presumably this would be done by removing the entire watch face portion of the watch, but that is unclear. The sources also claim that the watch will have customizable lugs and ship with a choice of straps and clasps to change as desired. The launch is tipped for March 14 and if the basic TAG Heuer smartwatch was $1,500, I would expect this one to be more.
