Super Hi-Res Displays to Start Appearing From 2013

By

With the recent launch of Apple’s new iPad and its 2048×1536 high resolution Retina display, it wasn’t hard to see that that this sort of resolution would start to find its way into other types of devices, such as desktops and various portable devices.

Intel has prepared a slide showing the expected resolutions to start appearing around 2013 onwards. For example, desktops could see 21″ monitors with 3840×2160 resolutions and the same for 15″ notebooks, while handhelds (mobile phones) could see 1280×800 resolutions. Part of the reason for this shift, is that Windows 8 will handle graphics scaling much better than previous Windows operating systems, allowing screen elements to remain the same size, while benefitting from higher resolution rendering. Note that Android and iOS already do this kind of scaling well. The link below also has some useful information about the resolution limits of the eye and the viewing distances recommended for various pixel densities.

Until supply and demand increase sufficiently, high resolution displays will still cost a heck of a lot more than the 1366 x 768 pixel displays that seem to be everywhere today and it took a long time for that resolution to finally become more popular than older 1024 x 768 pixel screens. Retina displays might remain the exception rather than the rule for years to come.
