Steam Hit by DDoS Attack as Origin and Blizzard Also Get Some Love

By

Online gaming services were targeted by hackers overnight for unknown reasons. The digital gaming service Steam was down for over an hour after being targeted for a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. The attack began at 11:00 p.m. ET last night and Steam’s authentication server and storefront went down shortly after, blocking a number of users from connecting to the distribution service’s website and client. The service was offline for approximately an hour before going back online, but there were still some issues early this morning.

Two Twitter users, @chFtheCat and @LARCENY_, have taken credit for the hacks. They also claim to have launched DDoS attacks against Blizzard’s Battle.net, the login system used by World of Warcraft and other games produced by Blizzard.

In other news, EA’s Original online gaming service was also attacked yesterday. The attack was apparently unrelated to the ones mentioned above and were done by a group calling itself DerpTrolling. Origin was having issues staying up for pretty much the entire day.

All online gaming services currently appear to be online and okay right now, but there is mention of a steam v2 attack.
