Spotify’s new free service: Some first impressions

By

The latest in the social music sharing web sites to hit the US. Spotify has been in Europe since 2009 but just this week hit our shores. Spotify streams music from their servers right to your device for free for 6 months (supported by audio ads inserted into your play lists). Best news is this is a legal way to explore new music. You can also share play lists with friends and link to your Facebook account.

After 6 months they limit the number of times you can play a song in a month and how many hour you can listen but of course you can upgrade to a pay plan. Clever new way to consume music of fairly popular artists.

Launched in the U.S. this week, Spotify is one of just a handful of services that have tried to build a business around offering songs on demand for free. Unlike ill-fated SpiralFrog, it provides streams, not downloads. And unlike Lala, which was snapped up and shuttered by Apple, users can play songs multiple times, not just once.
