Sony Silently Slips PS4 CUH-2200 Model into Japan
The PS4 consoles that are on the market right now are some variation of the CUH-2100 model. It looks like Sony is now rolling out a new version of the console that has some unidentified hardware tweaks. The new model number being seen in Japan only for now is CUH-2200.
Sony hasnt said anything about this new model number, but it has been seen online for purchase. Scuttlebutt suggests that most likely this is a mild hardware revision that makes the console cheaper for Sony to produce. There is no indication that the console will have any improved performance compared to other PS4 models already out there reports PCMag.
Typically, when the second digit in the model number of the console changes it signals minor hardware tweaks. The CUH-2200 model is offered in 1TB or 500GB black versions with some reports indicating a white version is available as well. The assumption is that all countries will get the new model as stock of the older version wane.
Another rumor about the hardware change suggests that the hardware tweaks could be meant to stop piracy. PS4 piracy is rampant with the current console having been cracked and games being shared freely online. Reports indicate that the hardware change could be specifically to combat piracy but that is unconfirmed.
