Sony PS5 Prices Will Rise Thanks to Tariffs

By

Sony execs were at a press event in Japan recently, and some executives warned that console prices would rise to offset trade tariffs that are expected to be imposed on goods made in China like the PS5. Tariffs are a tool that is being used on both sides of the Chinese and US trade negotiations and could impact the price of a lot of items.

This is the second warning that the tariffs will impact consumers reports TweakTown. For now, Sony is offering no insight into what the tariffs might mean for price increases on the console.

What we know about the tariffs now is that threats of a 25% tax on tech items like consoles and peripherals have been thrown around. If tariffs added another 25% to the cost of the console, that would undoubtedly impact who is willing to buy the PS5.

The assumption is that tariffs will be clear, if any are applied, before the next-gen game consoles launch. As it stands now, the PS5 is expected to launch for the holiday 2020 shopping season. Microsoft is expected to have its new game console out about the same time.
