Sofia flying telescope gives unique view of Orion

By

Presented in Seattle at the American Astronomical Society’s annual meeting, we get a unique look at the Orion Nebula as seen by a telescope mounted on the back of a modified 747 aircraft. Less hindered by the Earth’s atmosphere, the clarity of the images are amazing yet they have many other issues to deal with such as stabilization during flight and motion compensation. A telescope in the back of a modified 747 jet has snapped images of the Orion Nebula at a colour of light no other observatory in the world can see. They are the first results from the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (Sofia), designed to capture colours blocked by Earth’s atmosphere.
