Seagate Says Hard Drives Are Here To Stay

By

Are computer hard drives officially dead? That is a question you often hear enthusiasts talking about now that Solid-State Drives (SSDs) have come down in price and have become less problematic. Seagate answered this question in a recent blog post and said that hard drives are a long way from disappearing from the market. They also hinted that while NAND Flash dominates the portable media player market that it will eventually be replaced by cloud storage. Makes you ponder the future of storage a little bit. We think that hard drives will stick around for years to come for mass data storage and that SSDs will dominate the market as the primary OS drive and for web servers.

Funny how storage just keeps on living in so many forms. If you are one of the ones that thought cassette tapes would be dead by now – think again. Makes you may want to rethink the over-arching opinion of the near term demise of the hard drive – it just aint happenin. Sure flash dominates the portable media player market, but what happens with those are replaced by cloud storage? Just like hard drives alleviated you of the cassette tape storage case, they will free you from carrying anything but a cell phone. Im all for nostalgia, but hard drives have a long way to go before they are nostalgic.
