SanDisk Extreme 900 960GB Portable SSD Review
SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable SSD Conclusion
The SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable SSD 960GB model that we looked at today was wicked fast with speeds hitting 793 MB/s when reading data sequentially in the ATTO Disk Benchmark. The SanDisk Extreme 900 series is rated for speeds of up to 850MB/s Read/Write, so we came in a bit behind that on our particular test system. Real world performance is generally lower and we found that to be the case again for this drive, but we still managed to write data to the Extreme 900 at up to 460 MB/s. These are some impressive speeds and this is without a doubt one of the fastest drives on the market. It should be though as it is one of the first 10 Gbps USB 3.1 drives to come to market and has been targeted at those that want the fastest portable SSD around.
SanDisk was able to achieve these great speeds by using two SanDisk Ultra II 480GB TLC NAND based drives inside this enclosure that are run together in RAID 0. This might turn some people away, but that is what needed to be done to get theses speeds and it is these speeds that those working with large 4K video files and tons of high-res photos crave. It is also the reason that this external SSD is larger than many of the others on the market today.
When it comes to pricing the you can purchase the Sandisk Extreme 900 Portable SSD in 480GB, 960GB and 1.92TB capacities. All are backed by a 3-year limited warranty and need a USB 3.1 Gen 2 port capable of 5V @ 2A, 10W for normal operation. The Extreme 900 480GB model runs $312.32 shipped, the 960GB model is $459.99 shipped and the 1.92TB monster is $787.00 shipped. The price per GB around $0.48 for the SanDisk Extreme 900 960GB Portable SSD that we ran our performance tests on today. This is higher than some of the other portable SSDs on the market, but you are paying extra for the performance that this series is capable of. If you are looking for one of the fastest portable SSDs on the market today with a USB Type-C connector this drive needs to be on your short list.
Legit Bottom Line: The SanDisk Extreme 900 960GB SSD offers seriously fast storage for those that are looking to get the most from the USB 3.1 ports on their system!
