The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD was designed to be a rugged storage device for content creators to save and edit hi-res photos and videos. Out test results showed that performance would exceed the drives rated 550 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write speeds. We topped out at 562 MB/s read and 527 MB/s write speeds in ATTO Disk Benchmark over the USB 3.1 Gen-2 (10Gbps) interface using the Type-C connection on our Dell XPS 13 notebook. This drive was designed to work with Windows and Mac systems. The housing features a USB 3.1 Type-C connector and it comes with a USB Type-C to Type-C cable and a Type-C to Type-A adapter, meaning it will work on pretty much any system with an open USB port.

When it comes to pricing we were pleasantly surprised by what we found. The SanDisk Extreme 1TB Portable SSD that we tested today runs $299.99 shipped or about $0.30 per GB. That is pretty damn impressive considering it’s main competition, the Samsung T5 Portable SSD 1TB, runs $347.99 shipped or $0.35 per GB. We have tested the 500GB and 2TB capacities of the Samsung T5 Portable SSD series and they were both slightly faster in our file transfer test, but its up to you if you’d pay 16% more for that small difference. Both SanDisk and Samsung back these portable SSDs with limited 3-year warranties.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD joins the Extreme 900 and Extreme PRO USB 3.1 storage devices. SanDisk now has a mobile storage solutions for those on the go at a wide variety of price points. The SanDisk Extreme PRO USB 3.1 256GB drive offers solid performance at 420 MB/s read and 380 MB/s write speeds for $121.48 shipped, but you can get the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD 250GB drive with 550 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write for under $100 shipped. It is a larger drive, but it’s fast, rugged and we like that it works on both USB Type-C and Type-A connectors with what is included in the box.

At the end of the day the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD appears to be a solid portable SSD and offers fast, secure external storage for those on the go.
