Samsung Plans To Spin-Off LCD Business

By

South Korean juggernaut Samsung Electronics has confirmed the rumors that it plans to spin-off its LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) business. The LCD unit, which will be renamed Samsung Display Co, posted a loss of US $668 million last year due to a fall in TV sales. The new spinoff company may end up getting merged with Samsung Mobile Display, which manufactures OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panels, as Samsung tries to prepare for the growing demand for this technology.

The OLED display market may grow to more than $20 billion by 2018, accounting for about 16 percent of the total panel market, from an estimated $4 billion, or 4 percent of industry- wide revenue, last year, according to Santa Clara, California- based DisplaySearch.
