Samsung Becomes Largest Chipmaker By Revenue – Intel’s First Defeat Since 1992
Samsung Electronics manged to beat Intel as being the worlds biggest chipmaker by revenue, a claim that Intel has held since 1992. On Tuesday, Samsung reported 2017 chip sales of $69 billion, easily beating Intels record $62.8 billion from last year. Samsung managed to break the nearly 25 year streak by dominating in the memory chip, smartphone SoC markets. Samsung said it will continue to increase its focus for chipset focus on cloud services, AI and automotive.
Intel is still inside 90% of the world’s computers and sales were up 6%. Intel not only facing pressure from Samsung though as Qualcomm is pushing into the PC and server markets big time in recent months. The current race to get a strong foothold in the 5G technologies market is intense and we can’t wait to see how it pans out in the years to come.
