Rumor: Microsoft Xbox 720 Goes Blu-ray & Always On DRM

By

The latest rumors about Microsoft’s upcoming next-generation Xbox console are flying. First up, we have the Blu-ray addition for handling disc-based media, which just so happens to be contrary to some earlier reports. As far as specifications go, the console will be outfitted with a 4-6 core CPU alongside two GPUs. The real twist is the fact these GPUs, which are expected to be equivalent to AMD’s Radeon HD 7000 series, won’t be using CrossFire. Instead, it seems the multiple GPUs will work independently, drawing separate objects per frame simultaneously. More heartbreaking is the fact the Xbox 720 will be using an always-on internet connection forming the basis of their anti-piracy measures. Lending credence to these rumors are the numerous job opportunities at multiple developers for work on next-gen and future-gen systems for some time now. Time will tell all, and as it passes by things are becoming clearer, cracking down on piracy looks to be of extreme importance with the next generation of gaming systems.

The CPU is expected to have between four and six cores, one of which will be reserved for the OS, and another for the Kinect. Of course, if a Kinect does not come bundled with the main console and players don’t buy one separately this could mean that one core is going to waste. However, the report suggests that the new Kinect will come as standard and may actually be built into the console in some manner.
