Rumor: AMD Radeon HD 7000 Series Delayed Until 2012
Last week Legit Reviews was able to meet with AMD and was allowed to see a demo that showed an unnamed Radeon HD 7000 series card that was built on the 28nm process running the game Dirt 3. We know that AMD has been aiming to release 28nm cards this year and that NVIDIA would be launching 28nm silicone in early 2012. According to the site Nordic Hardware they have heard from sources that AMD will be delaying the launch of the Radeon HD 7000 series due to high demand of Radeon HD 6000 series parts that are selling really well in the market. Our sources at AMD wouldn’t say much about this rumor, but why should they? A rumor like this is a double win for AMD. It means that people will buy cards now and not wait if a launch has been pushed back. It might also mean that AMD is very confident in their 28nm GPUs and that they don’t fear going head to head with NVIDIA for a product launch. No matter how you look at it, this is good for AMD right? Don’t expect NVIDIA to sit around quietly though as they are bound to wake up PR marketing machine sooner or later.
We have now acquired information that says the same about AMD. The launch has been moved from 2011 to 2012 due to high demand for the HD 6000 series, and capacity problems. AMD has been having capacity problems over the last months for HD 6000, which has led to orders from OEM manufacturers and distribution channels have been stacking up. It also says that the HD 6000 series is hardly a year old and there is no rush to introduce the HD 7000 at the present day. While what AMD has told us may be true, other ources contradict at least the point of high demand. The HD 6000 series is not selling as well as AMD would like us to believe. This has resulted in low store stocks, but there is more to it. We know that TSMC will manufacture GPUs for both AMD and NVIDIA, and the large capacity problems there have lowered the expectations to 7-10,000 wafers based on 28nm this year.
