RPG Based on Magic: The Gathering Card Game in Development
E3 isn’t here yet and there has been quite a bit of news focused on gaming swirling about. One of the latest bits of news is that Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios is at work on a new AAA RPG that is based on the Magic: The Gathering card game. The new RPG is in development and will land for both consoles and PC gamers.
For now there isn’t much in the way of details about the game. There is no mention of the title, but there is a teaser that describes what the game will be like reports PlayStation Lifestyle. “The worlds most popular strategy card game, Magic: The Gathering transforms players into Planeswalkers, powerful mages who can travel between planes, cast spells and summon mythical creatures. The beloved trading card game has over 20 million fans across more than 70 countries, and is available in 11 languages. Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios’ new RPG will allow fans of the game to fully immerse themselves in the Multiverse, the rich fantasy world in which Magic: The Gathering takes place.”
CEO of Cryptic Studios Stephen D’Angelo says that the game will be an MMORPG and will be about the Magic world not the card game. We can assume that means the game will be more World of Warcraft than digital card game, which is probably good news for fans. D’Angelo compares the plans for the Magic game to how the studio handled Neverwinter. He says Dungeons & Dragons started as a pen and paper game, but Neverwinter wasn’t based on the rules of the original game.
If you are wondering, Cryptic Studios is also behind Star Trek Online along with Neverwinter. It’s not clear at this time when the game will launch.
