After Four Days of eSports Entertainment and Events, South Korean Powerhouse and Red Bull eSports Athlete Bomber Takes the Win at Gaming Tournament in Washington, D.C.
Santa Monica, CA September 22nd, 2014 No matter what the game, or what the language, an eSports match isnt over until the winner types gg or good game. eSports, or competitive videogame tournaments, has more than 70 million global viewers, and those that tuned in this past weekend to the Red Bull Battle Grounds Grand Finals witnessed a slate of eight competitors deliver gg to Washington, D.C. with a weekend of electrifying matches. Through the thunderous applause of the onsite spectators, Choi Bomber Ji Sung, emerged as the overall victor. Now ranked the #7 player in the WCS Rankings of Blizzard Entertainments award-winning real-time strategy game, StarCraft II, Bomber laid claim to his hard-earned trophy and title, and his share of the $50K prize pool.
Entering a transformed Lincoln Theatre, fans were greeted by massive, 20 ft high portraits of each player reimagined in comic book art style, depicting them as the heroes they are. Conquering hundreds of contenders along the five month, six tournament circuit, the eight pros assembled in the nations capital, each anxious for a win. Some players, such as last years WCS (StarCraft World Championship Series) winner Kim sOs Yoo Jin and North American player Sasha Scarlett Hosyn had more on the line than just prestige; a win in Washington could give them the WCS points needed to qualify for next months StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals.
Between matches on day one, video interviews integrated into the broadcast gave fans a more in-depth look into the personalities of these skilled players. Last years champion, Won PartinG Lee Sak explained his career goal as even after retirement, to be remembered. But the match of the weekend that wont soon be forgotten was between Choi Polt Seong Hun and Scarlett, both beloved North America based players. Polt ultimately made it through to the finals to shouts of USA! USA! USA! as American audiences claimed this revered Atlanta-based player and one of the first StarCraft II players to receive an athlete visa from the US government as their own.
Before the tournament began, eSports enthusiasts were treated to a full program of activities, giving them unprecedented access to some of the biggest personalities, best players, and most significant trailblazers in the growth of eSports. Kicking off with an industry panel discussion at Georgetown University School for Continuing Studies titled The Business of eSports, eSports illuminati including Twitch.tvs Ben Goldhaber, and panel moderator Sean Day[9] Plott gave earned insight into the career opportunities emerging in this field. Supplemented with meet & greet and autograph sessions with players and event casters, fans at the Red Bull Battle Grounds Grand Finals enjoyed the up close and personal access this tournament series is known for.
With this grand finale, the Red Bull Battle Grounds tournament season concludes. After the confetti clears, Bomber will work to retain his momentum, as he heads to the StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals.
