LR Has Real AMD Radeon R9 290X Reference Video Card Pictures!
Last week, Johan Andersson, lead developer at DICE, sent out a Tweet showed what was believed to be an AMD Radeon Hawaii GPU based video card. It turns out that the image was real and it was an AMD Radeon R9 290X video card from the Volcanic Islands series. The one thing that was ‘wrong’ about the image is that it showed a card using a GPU cooler that was not the final design.
AMD is holding their GPU 14 Tech Day Event today in Hawaii and showed off the real version of the card aboard the Battleship USS Missouri last night during a press event!
This time around Matt Skynner from AMD showed off the AMD Radeon R9 290X video card! As the companys Corporate Vice President and General Manager of AMDs Graphics Business Unit we are fairly certain that this is the real AMD Radeon R9 290X video card! As you can see the GPU cooler is different from the images that have been leaked in weeks past.
The back side of the card clearly shows the 6-pin and 8-pin power connectors along the top edge of the card and that there is no backplate used on the reference design. The one odd thing we noticed from this shot is that there is no AMD CrossFire interconnect on this card, but there is a spot there for it. We’ll have to see what is going on there later today.
When it comes to video outputs, there are a pair of DVI ports along with a DisplayPort and HDMI port.
We weren’t told any specs yet, but at least we were able to see a real reference card with the final reference cooler design. We have to say the new reference cooler looks good, but we can’t wait to see how it performs. Performance details will likely be shown and talked about at the GPU 14 Tech Day Event that starts now and can be watched here. Will the AMD Radeon R9 290X destroy the NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan?
We’ll bring you more coverage later today!
