Raja Koduri Joins Intel To Help Build Discrete Graphics Solution

By

On Tuesday, AMD announced that, Raja Koduri, the man behind the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) Intel confirmed. Yesterday, Intel confirmed that Raja Koduri has joined the chip giant as the new Chief Architect to Drive Unified Vision across Cores and Visual Computing. In that role Mr. Koduri will help Intel expand their strategy to deliver a high-end, discrete graphics solution to the PC market.

This is an interesting announcement to make just hours after Intel announced that they would be buying semi-custom Vega GPUs from AMD to place inside an 8th Gen Core mobile processor. Intel has tried to bring a discrete graphics solution to the market before, most recently with the Larrabee project, and had to abort plans to do so.

Intel said Koduri will expand Intel’s high-end graphics capabilities for a “broad range of computing segments.” Koduri has more than 25 years of experience bringing graphics products to market, so we have no doubt that he will do just that.

“Going forward under Koduri’s leadership, the company will unify and expand differentiated IP across computing, graphics, media, imaging and machine intelligence capabilities for the client and data center segments, artificial intelligence, and emerging opportunities like edge computing,” Intel noted in a news release.

The good news is that AMD has a roadmap in place and his departure won’t have any immediate impact on AMDs product offerings. When it comes to Intel, it will likely take them several years to bring something to market unless they already had something progressing nicely in the pipes before hiring on Raja Koduri.

This is a very big shift and it will be interesting to see how it turns out for both AMD and Intel!
