PNY XLR8 D22GX93XLP-5 (DDR2 1173) Memory Review
The Need For Speed
When you think of PNY, the first thoughts that come to mind are usually along the lines of budget memory modules and maybe a few video cards. They have never been seen as an enthusiast part, and therefore have not gotten a lot of coverage on web sites that cater to that community. PNY has decided to break the stereotype that they created about themselves with the release of a line of memory that is called XLR8 (accelerate in case you are reading this early in the morning, or are just slow!). Nate reviewed our first DDR kit of the XLR8 ram midway through last year, and found it to be a great performer. Re-reading that review got us a little giddy when we were preparing to take a look at this new offering from PNY. Today, we look at the PNY D22GX93XLP-5 XLR8 Performance Memory kit. I will not use that full name in this review. XLR8 will have to do so we can save a little time writing this review. Anyways, let’s start by taking a look at the specs
As you can see, the speed rating for this kit is DDR1173, which is a little odd. The kit is labeled as PC2-9384, like that is gonna be easy to remember. I am not sure why PNY went with this unorthodox speed, but hey to each their own!
At the kits speed of DDR1173 and at 2.2v, this kit is rated to run at timings of 5-5-5-15. Command rate is not listed, and we had mixed results when using the kit, which we will discuss. This kit is also SLI Certified and EPP enabled. The kit is double-sided with sixteen 64×8 DRAM chips. The PNY kit also has a lifetime warranty, so this should give users a bit of confidence as they use this ram.
Let’s take a closer look at the dimms.
