Organism Secretes Renewable Fuels Using CO2, Water, Sun

As the crisis in the middle east escalates and energy costs continue to skyrocket, it’s comforting to know there are alternatives on the horizon. While bio-engineered organisms can be the answer we are looking for in terms of cheap, renewable energy, many will say that it’s the stuff they make science fiction movies about. Others may say it’s also the stuff that horror movies are made from when things go terribly wrong. Hopefully the latter remains fiction and we can get busy harvesting the energy these critters output.

A biotechnology company in Massachusetts has created a genetically engineered organism capable of producing diesel fuel or ethanol, which can be used to run cars and jet engines. Joule Unlimited, a Cambridge-based producer of alternative energy technologies that was founded in 2007, developed a genetically engineered organism called a cyanobacterium, which uses water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce and secrete renewable fuels.
