Opera Promises Extensions for Browser

Opera was really starting to gain popularity a few years ago but its growth slowed considerably as compared to Firefox and Google Chrome. Part of that is almost certainly due to the more robust functionality offers of the other browsers through extensions. These have been wildly popular and a boon to many web surfers. Opera has seen the light and will begin supporting extensions so it can better compete in the marketplace.

Opera Software this week announced that it will add support for extensions to its flagship browser, mimicking the functionality of more popular rivals such as Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome. Opera 11 will support add-ons created using a variety of Web standards — including HTML5 and JavaScript — as well as Opera-specific APIs, or application programming interfaces, said Arnstein Teigene, the company’s product manager for desktop add-ons.
