Water Cooled Memory Modules Become Reality

Just a couple days ago OCZ Technology announced that they will soon be offering a PC2-9200 DDR2 memory kit that operates at 1150MHz and has the option of being water cooled. This is significant for three reasons. The first is that the OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC 2x1GB kit is the fastest 2GB kit of memory that is in production for the retail market, which means that OCZ is still a contender when it comes to the world’s fastest memory.

The second significant feature on these new modules is the fact that it features an 8-layer PCB versus the traditional 6-layer PCB that the majority of DDR2 memory is made with. In the press release OCZ claims that the new 8-layer PCB makes for a better memory module as it will have less ?crosstalk,? meaning that the module?s total signal integrity is improved. OCZ Technology is not the only memory company that has moved over to an 8-layer PCB as Cell Shock has already been selling them for months. It is possible for memory companies to use between 4-10 layer printed circuit boards on DDR2 modules as they are readily available on the market.

Last, but not least, OCZ is the first company to introduce water cooled heat spreaders that come standard on their retail memory modules. This makes the new OCZ PC2-9200 FlexXLC modules the world’s fastest memory kit and the only to integrate a water cooling solution to those that want to take advantage of it. OCZ’s unique heat spreader design, known as FlexXLC (Xtreme Liquid Convention), comes with two 3/8″ hose barbs for those that want to run water cooling lines to the pair of memory modules to get the ultimate in cooling.

It sounds good on the marketing slide, but let’s take a closer look at the module itself.
