Nintendo has no Plans for Switch Hardware Update

It seems like the Switch has been around for a long time, but it is just now getting ready to turn one. With a birthday coming up, many are wondering if there are any changes in store for the console in the near future. Nintendo has now confirmed that no Switch 2.0 is in the works and there is no hardware refresh coming in 2018 reports IBTimes.

Nintendo wants to extend the lifespan of the Switch beyond the normal five to six years. With no hardware changes, people and developers will have no choice but to stick with the console longer. Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto said, “When you think about what can be done with the Nintendo Switch as a device that can be taken on the go and that every person has in their hands to play, you realize it has many features not available on any other hardware to date.”

“Nintendo also has a system in place whereby the software developers focus on these hardware features in their development efforts for the continuation of the Nintendo Switch business. Up until now, the hardware life cycle has trended at around five or six years, but it would be very interesting if we could prolong that life cycle, and I think you should be looking forward to that,” he said.

Nintendo does plan this year to focus on new peripherals and accessories for the current Switch. This includes the Labo cardboard gear that has already launched. Some figure that new peripherals under the Labo name will launch for years to come. New games are also in the works and with the popularity of Nintendo’s first party games, the Switch will have no trouble selling well all year long.
