Mozilla Thunderbird To Thunder No More

By

Mitchell Baker of the Mozilla foundation has blogged that development of Firefox’s sidekick, the Thunderbird email client is to stop. He cited that this is because Thunderbird is pretty much what users want and just needs ongoing maintenance with security updates through the Extended Support Release process when needed, therefore Thunderbird is no longer a priority for Mozilla’s product efforts. He pointed out though, that third parties are welcome to develop the product further. Thunderbird reached version 13 a month ago and will receive one more version on November 20.

Most Thunderbird users seem happy with the basic email feature set. In parallel, we have seen the rising popularity of Web-based forms of communications representing email alternatives to a desktop solution. Given this, focusing on stability for Thunderbird and driving innovation through other offerings seems a natural choice.
