Microsoft Windows 7 Becomes Fastest-Selling OS in History

By

Microsoft announced at their annual Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC) the sales figures from their software products yesterday and the results might shock some of you. CEO Steve Ballmer said that sales of Windows 7 had reached 400 million licenses! Mmicrosoft Windows 7 was launched on October 22nd, 2009 and sold 150 million copies by June 2010. That means that Microsoft has sold 250 million over the past year! Microsoft also announced that the number of Office 2010 licenses sold rose to 100 million. These numbers obviously do not include pirated copies and we all know there are many millions of those. Microsoft is also talking about Windows 8 at WPC and we look forward to seeing what the changes will be.

Windows 7 Retail Box

Speaking before nearly 15,000 partners from around the globe, Ballmer said more than 400 million Windows 7 licenses have been sold in less than two years, and that the best way to prepare customers and prospects for the future is to move all customers to Windows 7. Echoing that point, Tami Reller, corporate vice president and chief financial officer of Windows and Windows Live, emphasized that Windows 7 is the path to Windows 8. Noting that there are still more than 200 million PCs running Windows XP, which was launched in 2001, Reller told partners they have a real opportunity to deliver more value to customers in the short term and set them up for the future.
