Intel Unveils Sandy Bridge: Core i7 2600K, i5 2500K, i5 2400, i3 2100 CPUs
Handbrake
HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows. Handbrake supports any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (unencrypted–protection methods including CSS are not supported internally and must be handled externally with third-party software and libraries), and some .VOB and .TS files. Handbrake is a great CPU transcoding utility that is widely used to convert DVD’s to popular formats supported by mobile devices.
We encoded the movie The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy from DVD to iPhone preset format.
Handbrake is one our favorite utilities for moving movies to our portable devices. Having a fast CPU certainly helps speed up the process. One thing that really surprised us was how much slower the Core i5 661 was than every other CPU here. We ran the test a few times but the result was the same each time.
As you can see in the screen shot Handbrake makes use of several threads but in this test doesn’t fully load up our Intel Core i7 2600K. The Core i3 2100 is left behind but the rest of our Sandy Bridge processors are at the top of the chart! Overclocking our i7 2600K did not give us nearly the improvement we expected to see. It’s clear that we need a more intensive CPU test to fully realize its full potential.
