Vulkan and OpenGL Gaming – 1 Title

Doom OpenGL

Doom (2016) was originally known as Doom 4, however it was rebranded as Doom to be a reboot of the famous series. Taking place on Mars which has been taken over by demons from Hell. These demons are of course experimented on and corrupted even further by the scientists before the demons overpower them. As the hero Demon Slayer, you are tasks with stopping the invasion at all costs. With no integrated benchmark, we will run a path three times and average the results. We selected to run a path outside in the Martian environment ignoring the demons. Doom includes both OpenGL 4.5 and Vulkan API’s. We want to see if there is a difference between the two, so we will run both scenarios. Settings will be configured to Medium with Anti-Aliasing set to TSSAA 8TX.

Doom Vulkan API

Ryzen 1700x Vs Intel i7-7700x

Both API’s on Doom showed similar results, with a difference in performance between 1% and 5% across the board. One thing I noticed though, is that while the Intel i7 system performed very similar to the AMD 1700x, the Intel Core i7 test was very choppy and didn’t seem to be able to keep up in gameplay; lowering the graphics quality the gameplay was smooth.
