Intel Core I7-7700K Kaby Lake Processor Overclocked and Benchmarked
Toms Hardware has a look at what appears to be a retail Intel Core i7-7700K Kaby Lake desktop processor today. They ran some tests on an Intel Z170 motherboard to see what the quad-core 95W TDP processor could do againt the Intel Core i7-6700K Skylake processor.
Model | Cores/Threads | Cache | Baseline Frequency | Max Turbo Boost | TDP | IGP |
Core i7-7700K | 4/8 | 8MB | 4.20 GHz | 4.50 GHz | 95W | 630 |
Core i7-6700K | 4/8 | 8MB | 4.00 GHz | 4.20 GHz | 95W | 530 |
Toms Hardware was able to get the to get the processor up to 4.78GHz when the overclocked it on the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Ultra motherboard whereas the Intel Core i7-6700K topped out at 4.59GHz on the same exact motherboard. This is a 280MHz overclock from the Turbo Boost clock on the Core i7-7700K versus a 390MHz overclock on the Core i7-6700K from the top Turbo Boost clock speeds. Power consumption was up a good bituntil the author did some manual UEFI configurations to get it dropped down.
When it came to gaming performance on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 video card, the editors over there saw small performance improvements that one would expect from the clock speed benefits that Kaby Lake has over Skylake.
So, be sure to head over to Toms Hardware and look at the Intel Core i7-7700K performance numbers if you want to look how early results are looking. We don’t have a Kaby Lake processor yet, so we will have to wait on Intel to give us one before we can do our own testing. These are early numbers, so keep in mind that with the latest UEFI updates and a Z270 platform that overclocking and performance could improve. For now it looks like Kaby Lake is a step in the right direction while some people wait for Cannonlake.
