IBM-led consortium to build Fab in N.Y.’s Tech Valley
AMD, Chartered, Infineon, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba, all led by IBM, are investing $1.9-billion towards the construction of a 300mm wafer Fab in N.Y.’s Hudson Valley. The news should bode well for the economy around East Fishskill, and the city of Albany perhaps giving N.Y State’s Tech Valley the same production status as it’s West Coast counterpart Silicon Valley. In related news ASML manufacturer of lithography equipment, has announced a decision to build it’s first R&D facility outside of Europe as part of an IBM funded semiconductor line at Albany Nanotech. In total approximately 1000 new jobs should be created as a result of these announcements, 750 at the extended IBM East Fishskill campus, and an additional 250 resulting from the VSML/Albany Nanotech R&D venture.
“IBM is also working with Sony to develop a microprocessor called “Cell” which as well as being the engine for Sony’s Playstation 3, is expected to vie for dominance of the converged computing and consumer electronics market place. IBM has other process technology research co-operation agreements with Sony, Toshiba, AMD, Infineon, Samsung and Chartered.”
“It’s been extremely exciting to see New York State become the center of innovation for leading edge semiconductor technologies. We are looking forward to the advancements and breakthroughs that are sure to result from our collaboration with New York State, the Albany Center of Excellence in Nanoelectronics, Albany NanoTech, and all of our distinguished high-tech partners.” John E. Kelly III, IBM’s senior vice president of technology.
