Hundreds Of Thousands Of Users May Be Without Internet On July 9th

By

When the FBI arrested those involved in this malicious adware attack which worked by changing the DNS of affected users, they set up 2 servers to intercept all of the internet traffic that was originally being routed to the scam artists’s servers to prevent those infected from losing their internet connections. Originally, the FBI was going to shut down these servers in March, but felt that wouldn’t give everyone enough time to clean out the computers, so the date has been extended to July 9th. After this time, those who are infected will no longer have access to the internet. For those infected, the most obvious signs are a decrease in page loading time and an inability to download and install anti-virus software. Many people have just accepted these conditions and have not bothered getting the situation taken care of, perhaps not even realize their security has been compromised.

“We started to realize that we might have a little bit of a problem on our hands because … if we just pulled the plug on their criminal infrastructure and threw everybody in jail, the victims of this were going to be without Internet service. The average user would open up Internet Explorer and get “page not found” and think the Internet is broken,” said Tom Grasso, an FBI supervisory special agent.
