Hitachi Joins WD in the 3TB Club – Launches Three 3TB Desktop Hard Drives

By

Hitachi has unveiled a new line up of 3TB storage solutions for a broad range of users from consumers to OEMs. The three 3TB drives that were announced today are high-performance Deskstar 7K3000 hard drive, the external Hitachi XL and the OEM focused Deskstar 5K3000. The Hitachi Deskstar internal hard-drive kit caught our eye as it looks very similar to WD’s Caviar Green 3TB drive that we have already reviewed. The kit includes a 3TB Deskstar 7K3000 hard drive, mounting screws, step-by-step instructions, and software that allows 32- and 64-bit operating systems to take advantage of the full 3TB of storage.

As you may already know once you go over 2.2TB you start to have some issues and you might need BIOS updates, HBA cards and some software to make a 3TB drive work properly. If you have an older legacy motherboard and an operating system with old file system standards you’ll find that most drives under 2.19TB should work, but any bigger than that and you have to jump through some hoops.

In a world of technology, theres one common thread among all of us storage. Its ubiquitous, and is growing rapidly as we continue to purchase, create, download and save content daily. With our new 3TB solutions, were delivering huge capacity to a broad base of users to help them meet todaysand tomorrowsdata storage needs, said Mike Williams, vice president and general manager of Hitachi Branded Business.
