Google to Monitor Shopping Habits with Android Phones

At the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Google CEO, Eric Schmidt showed an Android-based cell phone (probably the “HTC Nexus 2”) that is equipped with a near-field communications chip built in. Schmidt is hoping you’ll swipe your phone instead of your credit card in the near future. He believes that smartphones embedded with these types of processors will eventually replace standard credit cards. Many credit card companies agree. Similar to RFID chips, the new Near Field Chips (or N.F.C.) is more secure of the short range of use and lack of a magnetic strip.

Like everyone in the tech industry these days, Schmidt expressed optimism about the revenue potential of mobile devices and applications, particularly in the context of location-based services. “I don’t think people understood how much more powerful these devices were going to be than desktop computers,” he said.
