Google tests cars that drive themselves

Google really has now done it all. They have been testing self-driving cars for some time now in and around California. How much testing? Oh, how about 140,000 miles worth without a single reported Google-car-caused accident. Mind you, there are human passengers in the car who monitor progress and can take control if necessary. So it’s nearly 2011 and we have nary one flying car selling to the masses but we may just get a self-driving car as a warm up.

Engineers at Google have tested a self-driving car on the streets of California, the company has announced. The cars use video cameras mounted on the roof, radar sensors and a laser range finder to “see” other traffic, software engineer Sebastian Thrun said. They remain manned at all times by a trained driver ready to take control as well as by a software expert.
