GLOBALFOUDNRIES Celebrates 250,000th 32nm HKMG Wafer Shipment

By

Globalfoundries has announced that they have reached a new milestone at Fab 1 in Dresden, Germany. The company managed to improve yields on the 32nm high-k metal gate (HKMG) manufacturing process, which in just one quarter has allowed AMD to double their yields and exceed their shipping requirements. The successful ramp up of 32nm HKMG has also apparently far outstripped the 45nm ramp up, regardless of the integration of new and complex designs and process technologies. This signifies that 32nm has come into its own and at a far more rapid pace then previous manufacturing processes. This is essentially fantastic news for AMD, with Globalfoundries now able to pump out more 32nm wafers and higher yields overall will result in the supply no longer being constrained. The recent construction of another wafer manufacturing facility at Fab 1 has also allowed further increases in output at 45nm and below. This is fantastic news for Globalfoundries and their clients, which should see an increase in profitability due to better yields.

“Early in 2011 we met significant challenges in early yield learning on 32nm HKMG, said GLOBALFOUNDRIES CEO Ajit Manocha. However, we made several organizational and operational changes in the second half of the year that led to a dramatic increase in production velocity and major breakthroughs in yield learning. And since our 28nm technology uses the same HKMG implementation as 32nm, AMD and other customers will benefit greatly from our high-volume ramp of leading-edge APUs at 32nm.”
