Gigabyte Launches ‘New’ HD7770 – With Lower Clocks and Same Price

Gigabyte has launched a second revision of its HD 7770 graphics card and given it model number GV-R777OC-1GD (rev. 2.0). However, the only difference appears to be with the clock speeds, which have gone the wrong way – down. The two cards look identical and have identical boxes, with the only thing giving the difference away being the description on the boxes and the sticker on the cards. Revision 1 had a GPU clock of 1100MHz and memory of 5000MHz (effective). However, revision 2 has reduced these to 1050/4000MHz for some reason that isn’t clear. This is not the first time that Gigabyte have done this, either. This writer last year bought the Gigabyte GTX 560 Super Overclock (GV-N560SO-1GI) revision 2 and it was a similar story with that too. The original version, which I couldn’t find anywhere, came with a 1GHz GPU clock speed and 4580MHz memory clock speed. However, the new version ran only at a 950MHz GPU speed, while keeping the memory clock the same. Overclocking the card to 1000MHz turned out to be effortless and worked with complete stability, so it’s not clear why the speed was reduced for the second revision. In fact, it went all the way to 1100MHz+ before it lost stability. Looks like Gigabyte move in mysterious ways.
