GameStop Throws In The Towel, Begins Selling Steam Vouchers

By

A source talking to Kotaku has said that GameStop has admitted defeat in its digital war with Valve. GameStop, which acquired Impulse from Stardock back in 2011, has failed to push into online PC sales via digital distribution. So instead of trying to compete with Steam directly, GameStop will start selling vouchers in its brick-and-morter stores. These vouchers which will go on sale starting May 15th are apparently “kind of a sensitive issue” between GameStop and Valve. Considering how awkward the situation has become between both companies, I do have to wonder how this will work out; GameStop will be selling Steam vouchers while still operating Impulse, which could end up cannibalizing their own digital sales or it could end up becoming another revenue source. Tell us what you think.

GameStop Steam Voucher

A GameStop source has told Kotaku that, given the relative failure of the company’s push into online PC sales via its purchase of Impulse, it’s now trying something a little more practical. Namely, selling Steam vouchers in its bricks-and-mortar stores.
