Subjective Listening: Music, Movies, and Games

Not everyone hears the same as each other. People’s ears are different and preferences dictate our style. The subjective listening tests in our reviews not only compare the product with other gaming headsets, but also audiophile-grade headphones. Those who don’t regularly listen with higher-end equipment may not notice the sound quality deficiencies we are able to notice.

Music

The Func HS-260 has a similar sound characteristic to the Corsair Vengeance 1400 though not nearly as flat. Instead and unlike the Vengeance 1400, the HS-260 when broken in has a more energetic treble. Like the Vengeance 1400, the HS-260 bass is somewhat sloppy and imprecise enough that it doesn’t give a strong punch despite its presence. Overall, the HS-260 is adapted to work with a wide variety of music to appeal to a wide variety of listeners. While not particularly amazing when playing any single genre of music, it’s also not terrible at any.foobar_01_musicdemo

Movies

The HS-260 is generally well suited for watching video. The headphones aren’t the most impactful we’ve listened with, but movie watching was worthwhile with enough detail for the relevant frequencies. Most notable was a wide stereo soundstage which gives perceived distance to positional audio. Few headphones and headsets are capable of that simulated distance the HS-260 is capable of creating.

Games

The HS-260’s best asset for gaming is how much perceived stereo distance it can simulate. This is helpful for more accurately determining the direction positional audio cues are located because the distinction between left and right channels is more pronounced. Mileage will vary as front audio cues are still difficult to place.BF4_Siege_of_Shanghai_web_0

Microphone

The HS-260’s detachable microphone has good recording quality. Transmitted voice is recognizable with little distortion well on the level of other high-end gaming headsets. The microphone pickup pattern has some degree of direction and so the flexible boom may have to be bent to ensure adequate recording volume.
