Fortnite Crossplay Coming Thanks to Sony Finally Getting with the Program

It took a long time and more than a little shaming to get Sony to finally agree to allow crossplay of games between its PS4 and other platforms. Many thought than crossplay would never happen, but Sony has finally given gamers what they want. Sony has said that it has “identified a path towards supporting cross-platform features for select third-party content.”

That means crossplay action is coming and Fortnite is the first of the games to get support for that. The open beta allowing “gameplay, progression, and commerce” across the PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, Mac, Android, and iOS is underway. With the PS4 feather in its hat, Fortnite is now on every significant platform out there.

“We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution,” said John Kodera, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment. “We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.”

Fortnite players can finally frag each other on the same maps no matter the platform. This is a major change for Sony who was until now denying crossplay claiming that refusal to support crossplay was because the PlayStation was the best platform. Sony says this is a major policy change and that it is making plans to support the change across the organization reports Gamespot.
