FCC looking to accept 911 texting, MMS, and even streaming video

Have an emergency? Soon you may be able to text for help rather that calling the old faithful 911. It’s actually surprising this hasn’t surfaced sooner but better late than never. There are definitely times when speaking is not an option which makes calling 911 a bit difficult – especially when seconds count. We know how the less cerebral tend to call 911 for frivolous reasons so it stands to reason that sincere please for help may be hindered by less dire circumstances.

According to Wired Epicenter, the FCC is looking to follow in the footsteps of those trailblazing Iowans and expand its 911 services to allow emergencies to be reported via text message, and while at first glance that may sound silly, we can think of some times when it could make a lot of sense. Let’s say there’s someone in the house and you don’t want them to know where you are — texting is a lot quieter than talking.
